D2R Cube and Crafting recipes - Full guide
The Horadric Cube is one of the most useful tools in Diablo 2: Resurrected, and most players only ever learn a handful of its recipes before ignoring the rest. This is the complete recipe list — gem upgrades, rune upgrades, socketing, crafting, quest recipes, and the Uber Tristram key combine — with links straight to the ingredients you can buy instead of farm.
What the Cube Actually Does
You get the Horadric Cube from the Horadric Staff quest in Act 2, and it does two things for the rest of the game: it gives you 12 extra inventory slots for only 4 slots of space, and it transmutes whatever combination of items you place inside it into something new when you hit Transmute. That transmutation is permanent — always double-check the recipe before confirming.
Gem Upgrades
Three gems of the same type and quality combine into one gem of the next quality up:
- 3 Chipped → 1 Flawed
- 3 Flawed → 1 Normal
- 3 Normal → 1 Flawless
- 3 Flawless → 1 Perfect
Worth stockpiling Perfect gems specifically for the crafting recipes further down — particularly Perfect Ruby, Perfect Amethyst, and Perfect Sapphire.
Rune Upgrades
Two or three runes of the same type plus a specific gem produces the next rune up the ladder. This is your fallback when you can't find (or afford) the exact rune you need — though trading is almost always more gold-efficient than cubing a high rune from scratch.
- 3 El + 1 Chipped Sapphire → Eld
- 3 Eld + 1 Chipped Sapphire → Tir
- 3 Tir + 1 Chipped Sapphire → Nef
- 3 Nef + 1 Chipped Amethyst → Eth
- 3 Eth + 1 Chipped Amethyst → Ith
- 3 Ith + 1 Chipped Amethyst → Tal
- 3 Tal + 1 Chipped Ruby → Ral
- 3 Ral + 1 Chipped Ruby → Ort
- 3 Ort + 1 Chipped Ruby → Thul
- 3 Thul + 1 Chipped Topaz → Amn
- 3 Amn + 1 Chipped Topaz → Sol
- 3 Sol + 1 Chipped Diamond → Shael
- 3 Shael + 1 Flawed Sapphire → Dol
- 3 Dol + 1 Flawed Sapphire → Hel
- 3 Hel + 1 Flawed Amethyst → Io
- 3 Io + 1 Flawed Amethyst → Lum
- 3 Lum + 1 Flawed Ruby → Ko
- 3 Ko + 1 Flawed Ruby → Fal
- 3 Fal + 1 Flawed Topaz → Lem
- 3 Lem + 1 Flawed Diamond → Pul
- 2 Pul + 1 Flawed Diamond → Um
- 2 Um + 1 Topaz → Mal
- 2 Mal + 1 Amethyst → Ist
- 2 Ist + 1 Sapphire → Gul
- 2 Gul + 1 Ruby → Vex
- 2 Vex + 1 Emerald → Ohm
- 2 Ohm + 1 Diamond → Lo
- 2 Lo + 1 Flawless Topaz → Sur
- 2 Sur + 1 Flawless Amethyst → Ber
- 2 Ber + 1 Flawless Sapphire → Jah
- 2 Jah + 1 Flawless Ruby → Cham
- 2 Cham + 1 Flawless Emerald → Zod
Worth knowing: at the high end especially, it's usually cheaper to just buy the rune you actually need than to cube two of the previous one up to it — check current prices before committing runes to a cube recipe.
Socketing Recipes
These add random sockets to a Normal (white/grey) item only — Magic, Rare, Set, and Unique items can't be socketed this way:
- 1 Ral + 1 Amn + 1 Perfect Amethyst + a normal weapon → socketed weapon
- 1 Tal + 1 Thul + 1 Perfect Topaz + normal body armor → socketed armor
- 1 Ral + 1 Thul + 1 Perfect Sapphire + normal helm → socketed helm
- 1 Tal + 1 Amn + 1 Perfect Ruby + normal shield → socketed shield
Removing Sockets
1 Hel Rune + 1 Scroll of Town Portal + any socketed item → the item comes back with empty sockets. The gems/runes/jewels inside are destroyed, but the base item survives intact.
Item Upgrades
Turns a Normal-quality Unique/Set item into its Exceptional version, or an Exceptional into Elite:
- 1 Ral + 1 Sol + 1 Perfect Emerald + Normal Unique Weapon → Exceptional Unique Weapon
- 1 Lum + 1 Pul + 1 Perfect Emerald + Exceptional Unique Weapon → Elite Unique Weapon
- 1 Tal + 1 Shael + 1 Perfect Diamond + Normal Unique Armor → Exceptional Unique Armor
- 1 Ko + 1 Lem + 1 Perfect Diamond + Exceptional Unique Armor → Elite Unique Armor
The same recipes work on Rare items using a different rune pair (Ort+Amn for weapons, Ral+Thul for armor at the first tier; Fal+Um and Ko+Pul respectively for the second).
Reroll Recipes
- 6 Perfect Skulls + 1 Rare Item → the same item, re-rolled stats
- 1 Stone of Jordan + 1 Rare Item → a different Rare item of the same type, re-rolled
- 3 Magic Items of the same type → 1 new Magic Item of that type, re-rolled
Respeccing — Token of Absolution
Once you've burned through your three free Den of Evil respecs, this is the only other way to reset your skills and stats. Every Act boss on Hell drops one essence: Andariel/Duriel → Twisted Essence of Suffering, Mephisto → Charged Essence of Hatred, Diablo → Burning Essence of Terror, Baal → Festering Essence of Destruction. Combine one of each in the cube for a Token of Absolution — one full respec.
Quest Recipes
- Horadric Staff (Act 2): Staff of Kings + Amulet of the Viper → Horadric Staff, needed to open Tal Rasha's tomb.
- Khalim's Will (Act 3): Khalim's Flail + Khalim's Brain + Khalim's Heart + Khalim's Eye → Khalim's Will, needed to destroy the Compelling Orb.
- Secret Cow Level: Wirt's Leg + Tome of Town Portal, cubed while standing in the Rogue Encampment → a red portal to the Cow Level. You need to have killed Baal on your current difficulty first.
Uber Tristram
Only works in Harrogath on Hell difficulty, and only on Battle.net-style multiplayer realms — not single player:
- Key of Terror + Key of Hate + Key of Destruction → a random portal to one of the three Pandemonium areas (Matron's Den, Furnace of Pain, Forgotten Sands), where the Uber bosses drop organs.
- Diablo's Horn + Mephisto's Brain + Baal's Eye → the red portal into Uber Tristram itself.
Crafting Recipes
Crafting combines a specific Magic-item base, a specific rune, and a Perfect gem into an item with guaranteed mods plus random affixes. Four categories exist, each built around one Perfect gem:
- Blood (life steal, open wounds, crushing blow) — uses Perfect Ruby
- Caster (FCR, mana, mana regen) — uses Perfect Amethyst; the Caster Amulet (Ral rune + a magic amulet) is arguably the single most valuable craftable item in the game when it rolls +2 skills, 20% FCR, life, and resistances — genuinely competitive with something like Mara's Kaleidoscope
- Hit Power (knockback, on-hit procs) — uses Perfect Sapphire
- Safety (damage reduction, magic resistance) — uses Perfect Emerald
Each category uses a different rune per item slot (amulet, ring, gloves, belt, boots, helm, shield, armor, weapon) — a lot of specific combinations to keep track of, so it's worth writing down just the ones for the slot you're actually crafting rather than memorizing the whole table.
Item level matters: a crafted item's possible affix pool depends on (ilvl of the base magic item ÷ 2) + (your character level ÷ 2) — high-level ingredients on a high-level character produce noticeably better results than the same recipe done early.
A Few Useful Extras
- Refill throwing weapons: any Axe + any Dagger refills Throwing Axes; any Bow + any Sword refills Arrows; any Crossbow + any Sword refills Bolts.
- Repair anything: 1 Ral + 1 Scroll of Town Portal + a damaged weapon or armor piece fully repairs it.
- Recharge a staff: 1 Ort + a staff with charges restores it to full.
